Fairford Traction Engine Rally - The Park, Fairford - Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August CANCELLED details: The Fairford Traction Engine Rally will take place this year on Saturday and Sunday 16 and 17 August in Fairford Park. The official opening will be by Willie Carson at 12.30pm on Saturday. As well as the “No Limitz” motorcycle display team, there will be a funfair, model and craft tents, horticultural show, trade stands, on-site refreshments and catering. LOCAL ALERT - Deployed Operations Training Exercise - RAF Fairford 20 September till 31 October details: The Deployed Operations Training exercise that took place in September and October last year at RAF Fairford is to be repeated in 2008. The autumn Deployed Operations Training exercise will start on 20 September and finish on 31 October with the main activity taking place between 13 and 16 October. However, jets will start to arrive on 2 October and, by 13 October, the exercise will be at full operating capability. The 8 Tornado GR4 aircraft and 7 JAS39 Gripen aircraft from Sweden will operate between the hours of 10am and 11pm and there will be up to 24 aircraft sorties per day. It will be necessary, however, for maintenance reasons, to have aircraft engines running without the aircraft actually flying and a maximum of one airfield attack, which will take place during the day. There will also be tannoy broadcasts and simulated explosions. As well as the 750 deployed base personnel, there will be Air Combat Support Units. A spokesman for RAF Fairford confirmed that last years exercise went very smoothly and there were no complaints about traffic movements in the area. There was concern that the tannoy system used during the exercise was too noisy and it is planned to use the system less frequently this time.
